Cal State Fullerton freshman Erin
Shelton (Redlands, Calif.) had two assists on the afternoon and three
different Titans found the back of the net as Fullerton clinched its second
tournament title of the season, winning the UCI Nike Invitational with
a 3-1 victory over Montana on Sunday afternoon at Anteaters Stadium in
Irvine, Calif.
The Titans improved to 3-0 overall on the season while the Grizzlies fell
to 1-3.
Sophomore Kellie Cox (Lancaster,
Calif.) got the Titans on the board early in the first half, sending home
a header in the box on a nifty pass from Shelton in the 20th minute for
the 1-0 advantage.
Freshman Kandace Wilson
(Walnut, Calif.) made it 2-0 on a breakaway in the 28th minute, giving
Cal State Fullerton a shutout lead heading into the break.
Montana got on the board in the 59th minute as Brianna Hitchcock converted
on a penalty kick, sending the ball into the upper left corner of the
frame to cut the Titan lead to 2-1.
However, freshman Elizabeth
Dokulil (San Clemente, Calif.) put things out of reach in the 69th
minute, taking a cross in the box from Shelton and fellow freshman Desiree
Flint (Redondo Beach, Calif.) to make it 3-1.
Cal State Fullerton outshot Montana, 29-5, as freshman goalkeeper Karen
Bardsley (Chino Hills, Calif.) had to make only two saves on the afternoon.
She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for her efforts. Shelton
and Wilson each took six shots on the day to lead the team.
The Titans return to action this weekend when they travel to Portland,
Ore., to take on the nationally-ranked Pilots and Washington Huskies at
Merlo Field in the Nike Portland Invitational.
