Sinclair
Sinks Titans in OT as Pilots Prevail Sept. 13, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Portland sophomore Christine Sinclair headed in the winning goal off a long cross from teammate Kelsy Hollenbeck in the eighth minute of overtime to propel the No. 6-ranked Pilots to a, 2-1, victory over Cal State Fullerton in the second match of the day at the Nike Portland Invitational in Portland, Ore., on Friday evening. The Titans suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 3-1 overall. Portland improved to 3-2 overall on the year, posting victories in its last three consecutive matches. Sinclair scored both of the Pilots' goals on the day, getting Portland on the board first in the 71st minute of the match. Taking a pass from teammate Wanda Rozwadowska at the top of the box, Sinclair dribbled right and beat Titan goalkeeper Karen Bardsley (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) far post for the 1-0 lead. It was her third goal of the season and the third in as many matches. However, Cal State Fullerton would not be denied as freshman Kandace Wilson (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) tallied the equalizer in the 89th minute of the match, taking a through ball from senior Michele Bannister (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) on the left side of the field and firing far post, beating Pilot keeper Cristin Shea to knot it at 1-1. It was the third goal of the season for Wilson, who leads the team in that category. The Titan defense then weathered three quick shots as the overtime period began, but Sinclair's header at the 97:05 mark in the first overtime period clinched the victory for the Pilots. Portland outshot Cal State Fullerton 23-4 overall in the match while Bardsley was busy in net, making 12 saves on the night. The saves total places Bardsley in a tie for fifth place on the school's single-match list, joining Suzy Strazzulla (1996) and Heidi Clauss (1993). The Titans will have Saturday off to prepare for No. 12 Washington which fell to Denver, 1-0, earlier on Friday afternoon on the final day of action at the Portland Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 15) at Noon.
