Titans Pull Off Upset of No. 24 Saint Mary's

Cal State Fullerton senior forward Michele Bannister (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) scored the lone goal of the match in the 69th minute and the Titans defense held on for a 1-0 shutout of No. 24 Saint Mary's on Friday night in the first match of the 2002 UCI Nike Invitational at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif.

With the victory, the Titans improved to 2-0 overall on the season while the Gaels, who entered the match ranked No. 24 by Soccer Times and opened the season ranked as high as 13th in one preseason poll, fell to 1-2 on the year. It is the first time that Fullerton has opened the season 2-0 since 1995 en route to a 14-5-0 record.

Bannister got the Titans on the board in the second half, intercepting a pass from Saint Mary's goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery and firing it into the back of the net from the top of the box. It was the only shot of the match for Bannister.

Fullerton freshman goalkeeper Karen Bardsley (Chino Hills, Calif.), who had to make just two saves on the night and faced five shots overall, and the rest of the Titan defense them clamped down, frustrating the Saint Mary's offense for the rest of the match.

Cal State Fullerton outshot Saint Mary's, 17-5, and played rough on the evening, committing 16 fouls to the Gaels' five.

Play continues on Sunday (Sept. 8) at 11 a.m. as the Titans take on Montana in the tournament finale for Cal State Fullerton. Saint Mary's will take on UC Irvine in the second match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
