Sandoval
Shines for Mexico in Gold Cup Action Oct. 30, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Cal State Fullerton freshman defender Marlene Sandoval (Placentia, Calif.) has been frustrating the opposition as a member of the Titans' defensive back line this season. Now she is doing it against the opposition on the world stage as a member of the Mexican Women's National Team. On Tuesday night (Oct. 29) at Fullerton's Titan Stadium, Sandoval scored her first goal of the 2002 Women's Gold Cup tournament, helping lead Mexico to a 5-1 victory over Panama in Group 1 action. The Mexican National Team is currently in second place in the group with a 1-1 record, hoping to finish as one of the top two teams in the group to advance to the semifinals on Nov. 6 in Seattle, Wash. For the Titans this season, Sandoval is part of a suffocating Titan defense which has held opponents to just 16 goals which ranks in a tie for second in the Big West Conference and is nine goals ahead of last year's pace of 25 goals allowed which was a school record. Sandoval has also shown that offensive spark for the Titans this season, scoring the eventual game-winner in a 4-0 victory over San Diego State on Sept. 27. Cal State Fullerton is currently 11-3-1 overall and 5-1 in Big West play for a second place tie. The Titans will battle the top two teams in the conference this weekend as they take on second-place Cal Poly on Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. and first-place UC Santa Barbara on Sunday (Nov. 3) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. ####
