A free kick from about 50 yards out by UC Riverside's Kristi Tanaka was
headed over the Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper by one of her own players
as the Highladers doused the Titans' playoff hopes with a 1-0 victory
on Friday night at Titan Stadium.
Cal State Fullerton finishes the 2002 season with a 12-5-1 overall record
and a 6-3 mark in the Big West Conference. UC Riverside finishes the year
with a 10-8-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 in the Big West.
The Titans outshot the Highlanders 22-10, but were sidetracked by 23 fouls,
compared to just 14 for UC Riverside.
Fullerton had numerous scoring chances, but Riverside goalkeeper Katie
Blank held the Titans at bay with 11 saves on the evening.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Allison
Bowman (Diamond Bar, Calif.), who had four shots on the night, and
Kim Houg (Upland, Calif),
who had three shots in her final collegiate match.
Before the match, the Titans honored their three seniors for their accomplishments
in a Titan uniform. Janelle
Garcia (San Jose, Calif.), Houg and Lindsey
Glick (Torrance, Calif.) were each presented with a framed action
photo as a memento of their years with the Cal State Fullerton women's
soccer team.
