Wilson Named First-Team All-Big West
Nov. 11, 2003 -- Fullerton, Calif.

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Kandace Wilson was named to the All-Big West Conference first team and sophomore defender Marlene Sandvoal earned second-team honors on Tuesday as the league office released its 2003 women's soccer all-conference teams as voted on by the Big West's coaches.

Wilson, one of three underclassmen to earn first-team all-conference honors, became the fifth Titan in the last two years to earn a spot on the first team. She finished the year with a team-best 10 goals and three assists (23 points) finishing in the top three in the Big West in five different offensive categories after the regular season.

She already ranks sixth on the career points list (40), fourth in career goals (17), fifth in career shots (86), and tied for second in career game-winning goals (6). Cal State Fullerton was 7-0-1 in 2003 when Wilson scored a goal.

Sandoval was a crucial part of the Titan defense in 2003, earning her second all-conference honor after making the All-Big West Honorable Mention team as a freshman.

She missed time during the season due to a concussion and committments to the Mexican Women's National Team, but came back to score a pair of goals and assist on three others to finish fourth on the team in scoring. Sandoval helped the Titan defense to hold six opponents to 10 shots or less and seven others to 15 shots or fewer.

Four Titans were named to the honorable mention team: sophomore midfielder Erica Pryor (4 goals, 2 assists), freshman midfielder Lauryn Welch (2 goals, 4 assists), junior defender Vanessa Valentine, and record-setting senior goalkeeper Laura Janke (1.21 goals against average, six shutouts).

It is Valentine's third all-conference honor after earning a spot on the second team as a freshman and the honorable mention team last season. Janke was named to the honorable mention for the second time in her career, while Pryor and Welch each earned their first all-conference honors.

Cal State Fullerton finished the year with a 9-8-2 overall record and a 3-5-1 record in the Big West to finish in a tie for seventh with Pacific. Despite a rash of injuries to a core group of some of the team's top players, season highlights included a win over then-No. 13 Clemson and ties with No. 13 Santa Clara and No. 19 Cal Poly.

The Titans finished 7-1-1 at home in 2003 and faced one of the toughest schedules in school history, going up against a slate that featured six teams ranked in the top 25 at the time of the match.
