Idaho's Melissa Martinazzi and Maureen Cindrich each scored goals on Sunday
afternoon to lead Idaho to a 2-0 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton
in Moscow, Idaho.
Cal State Fullerton fell to 8-7-2 overall, 2-4-1 in the Big West Conference,
finishing the year 0-6-1 on the road this season (the first time the Titans
have gone winless on the road since 1993 - the first year of the program)
and setting the school record for the most times shut out in a year with
seven. The Titans were outscored 13-1 on the road in 2003.
Idaho won its first Big West Conference match of the year to end a 13-game
conference losing streak dating back to last season. The win also was
the first career conference win for Vandal head coach Arby Busey as Idaho
improved to 1-6 in league play and 3-10-4 overall.
The Vandals took the lead when an Emily Nelson corner kick found
Martinazzi in front of the goal and she was able to tap it in at the 38:50
mark to score her first career goal. With the score 1-0 to start the second
half, Idaho added an insurance goal when Maureen Cindrich gathered a deflection
by the Titan keeper and put it into the back of the net at the 47:31 mark
for her first career goal.
Nelson’s assist was the sixth of her career and moved her into a
tie for fifth place all-time at Idaho.
Cal State Fullerton made a valiant attempt to get on the board with eight
second half corner kicks, however the play of the Idaho defense and the
six saves from Idaho goalkeeper Kim Carey secured a shutout for the Vandals.
Cal State Fullerton closes out the 2003 season with
a pair of home matches this weekend against Long Beach State (Oct. 31)
and UC Irvine (Nov. 2) at Titan Stadium. The Titans will salute their
two seniors, goalkeeper Laura Janke and midfielder Nadia Hernandez, prior
to Sunday's match with the Anteaters.
