Oliveira Lifts 49ers to Victory Over Titans, 2-1
Oct. 31, 2003 -- Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Long Beach State's Amber Oliveira scored the game-winner in the 74th minute to lift Long Beach State to a 2-1 victory over host Cal State Fullerton on Friday night at a rainy Titan Stadium.

Cal State Fullerton falls to 8-8-2 overall, 2-5-1 in the Big West Conference, and was offically eliminated from contention for a spot in the conference tournament next weekend. The Titans also lost their first match at home this season, falling to 6-1-1. Long Beach State improved to 9-8 overall, 5-3 in Big West play.

Long Beach State broke the scoreless tie right away in the sixth minute of the match when Abie Curry, hero of last year's match in Long Beach, scoring in the final :22 to win the game for the 49ers over a nationally-ranked Titan squad, put home a ball that was turned over in the box by the defense for the 1-0 advantage.

Fullerton got the equalizer in the 29th minute when freshman Lauryn Welch notched her first career goal to make it 1-1. A long shot from sophomore Marlene Sandoval deflected off goalkeeper Tara Gotthardt's hands to the feet to Welch, who put it past the line from a close angle.

Welch is the ninth player to tally a goal for the Titans this season and the eighth underclassman to find the back of the net.

However, it was Oliveira's strike that gave the 49ers the win. She half-volleyed a pass from teammate Kristin Travis off the right post and into the net for the eventual game-winner.

The Titans had two chances in the final minute when a flurry of players in the goal box netted a pair of shots for Fullerton with Gotthardt out of position, but her defense saved the day with two game-saving clears.

Fullerton played without the services of leading scorer Kandace Wilson, who served a one-match suspension after a red card earned against Idaho on Oct. 26.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 2) at 1 p.m. as they host UC Irvine in the final regular season match of the 2003 season at Titan Stadium. Titan seniors Laura Janke and Nadia Hernandez will be honored prior to kickoff for their contributions to the women's soccer program.
