Titans
Rebound to Blank Oregon, 5-0 Sept. 28, 2003 -- Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Cal State Fullerton sophomore’s Paige Morgan and Kandace Wilson each had a pair of goals on the day while Wilson also chipped in a pair of assists as the Titans rebounded from a loss to UC Santa Barbara on Friday with a 5-0 shutout of Oregon on Sunday afternoon in front of 260 fans as Titan Stadium. Fullerton, winners of three of its last four contests, improved to 6-3 overall on the year while Oregon lost its fourth straight match and fell to 5-4. It is the first win for the Titans over an opponent from the Pacific-10 Conference since Sept. 13, 1998, when they defeated Washington State, 2-1, in a match played at Logan, Utah. Cal State Fullerton snapped a six-match winless streak (0-5-1) against the Pac-10 and notched only its fifth win in 26 chances against a Pac-10 opponent (1-1 this year). Oregon pressed the tempo early, releasing three shots in the first 15 minutes from within seven yards or less of the goal, missing wide right on two and having the third blocked by a Titan defender. However, better late than never was the theme in the first half for Cal State Fullerton as Wilson got the Titans on the board in the 42nd minute, taking a long free kick from sophomore Marlene Sandoval from midfield and firing home a rocket to the left post from about 17 yards out for the 1-0 lead. Wilson helped put the Titans up 2-0 with just 30 seconds remaining in the first half as she fired a long pass across the top of the box to a wide open Paige Morgan, who juked Oregon’s goalkeeper Domenique Lainez trying to make the stop and finding the back of a wide open net for her first career goal and her first of the season. Morgan wasted no time in scoring her second goal of the contest, just over four minutes into the second period, heading home a long throw in from Wilson to the near post for a 3-0 Titan advantage. Wilson tallied her second goal of the match in the 78th minute, sprinting between two defenders, settling a long pass from teammate Erin Shelton and beating the goalkeeper one-on-one for the 4-0 lead. Junior Amy Stanley notched her first career goal in a Titan uniform in the 82nd minute, taking a pass from Kate Brunet across the box to the left side where Stanley fired near post to cap the scoring. Senior goalkeeper Laura Janke made a pair of saves while facing seven shots and notching her fourth shutout of the year for the Titans. Lainez had one save in the first half and was pulled in the 85th minute in favor of Mary Etter. Fullerton returns to action next weekend for a pair of road contests. The Titans travel to Malibu, Calif., for a Friday afternoon (Oct. 3) match-up with nationally-ranked Pepperdine at 3 p.m. Fullerton then continues Big West Conference play at UC Riverside on Sunday (Oct. 5) at 1 p.m. ####
