UC Irvine sophomore Kim Lloyd scored a pair of first half goals and the
Anteaters scored three times in their first five shots of the match as
UCI defeated San Diego State, 4-1, on Monday afternoon at Titan Stadium
in the final day of action in the 2003 SOCCER TOWN Classic.
The Anteaters improved to 2-1 overall on the year while the Aztecs fell
to 0-2.
UC Irvine wasted no time in getting on the board in the fifth minute of
the match as Lloyd booted a perfectly-placed rocket from 18 yards out
into the upper left corner of the frame for the 1-0 lead.
Caroline Kabe notched the assist on the play, sending a perfect ball ahead
from just inside the midfield stripe to a streaking Lloyd who was thought
to be ahead of both defenders, but offsides was not called.
Hayley McNallen added the Anteaters' second goal of the half, taking a
pass from Lindsay Duke and fighting through through two defenders and
chipping it over the goalkeeper's head for the 2-0 advantage.
Lloyd added her second goal of the match just six minutes later, taking
a short cross from Lachelle Manzano and firing it home from three yards
out to make it 3-0 and it stayed that way until the half.
The Anteaters didn't let up in the second half as freshman Lauryn Birkenshaw
took a long pass from Tara Weldon and ran 45 yards up the right side,
chipping it into the upper left corner for a 4-0 lead.
San Diego State finally got on the board in the 72nd minute as Kim Castellanos
converted on a penalty kick for the final score.
UCI held a 9-4 advantage in shots in a match which was plagued by 35 total
fouls.
