Cal State Fullerton sophomore Marlene Sandoval and junior Kellie Cox hooked
up twice in the first half and the Titans' offense outshot Fairleigh Dickinson,
27-6, en route to a 2-1 victory in the final match of the 2003 SOCCER
TOWN Classic on Monday afternoon at Titan Stadium.
Cal State Fullerton (1-0) wins its second conseucitve season opener and
improves to 4-7 all-time in that category. FDU is 0-2 having lost to UCI
on Saturday, 2-0.
Sandoval scored her first two goals of the season in the eighth and 38th
minutes, both coming off crosses from Cox, who placed the ball perfectly
to the far left post on both scores.
Sandwiched inbetween was a goal by FDU's Marguerite Ferrell, who sent
a rocket from about 30 yards out that defelected off a Cal State Fullerton
defender into the net to tie the score at 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
Fairleigh Dickinson pushed the tempo early, as Marguerite Ferrell sent
a rocket from the top of the box which hit the cross bar and bounced straight
down to a waiting Stephanie Young, but Young could not connect either
and the ball was cleared out.
Two minutes later, Fullerton answered back with a crossbar shot of its
own as sophomore Kandace Wilson clanged one off the top of the frame from
about three yards out.
Wilson, Cox and sophomore Allison Bowman also had strong chances for goals
in the second half, but missed the frame by mere inches each time.
Titan senior goalkeeper Laura Janke had to make just one save on the afternoon,
facing just six shots. Andrea Maston made six saves for the Knights in
the loss.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Wilson and Cox, who each had five shots.
Ferrell added three shots to lead Fairleigh Dickinson.
