Wilson Named Co-MVP, Titans Win UCI Tourney

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Kandace Wilson won tournament Co-Most Valuable Player honors and senior Laura Janke pitched her second consecutive shutout as the Titans won the UCI Nike Holiday Inn Invitational for the second consecutive season with a 2-0 blanking of New Mexico on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.

Fullerton improves to 3-0 overall on the season, winning four of its last five dating back to the end of last year. The Lobos fell to 0-2-1.

The Titans got on the board just over nine minutes into the game when Erin Shelton sent a pass to Wilson in the midfield that led to a breakaway for the game-winning goal. Wilson earned the assist on the Titans' second goalof the match as she threw the ball deep into the New Mexico end that was headed in by Allison Bowman.

Goalkeeper Laura Janke earned the shutout for the Titans while picking up two saves. Lobo goalkeeper Kristen Winters had five saves on the afternoon.

The UC Irvine Nike Holiday Inn Invitational Offensive Co-MVP’s were Hayley McNallan for UCI and Kandace Wilson for Cal State Fullerton. Defensive MVP for the tournament was junior Alyson Spencer of UC Irvine and the Goalkeeper MVP went to Marissa Welliver of UCI.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend (Sept. 13-14) when the Titans travel north to take on defending national champion Portland and Washington at the Portland Nike Invitational.
