The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team got a goal and an assist from
junior Erin Shelton and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Karen Bardsley earned
her fourth shutout of the season as the Titans defeated archrival Long
Beach State, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at George Allen Field in Long Beach,
Calif.
The Titans extended their winning streak to six-straight matches in improving
to 10-7-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Big West. Long Beach State fell to
6-9-2 overall, 1-6-1 in the Big West.
Fullerton remained in a tie for first place in the league with UC Santa
Barbara, which eked out a 1-0 road victory at Idaho on Friday. The five
road victories this season for the Titans tie the school record set in
1995.
Cal State Fullerton got down to business in the third minute, as junior
Erica Pryor bounced in a shot from 35 yards out for second goal of the
season.
Shelton and junior Kandace Wilson then iced the victory for the Titans,
each scoring goals just over a minute apart for the final score. Junior
Rebekah Patrick assisted on Shelton's tally (her first of the season)
before Shelton earned the assist on Wilson's goal (her 10th of the year)
in the 64th minute.
The Titans outshot the 49ers, 16-6, for the match, including a 9-2 margin
in the second half. Bardsley had four saves in the match in earning her
sixth win of the season in net.
With the victory, Cal State Fullerton reached 10 wins in a season for
the third time in four seasons under Head Coach Ali Khosroshahin and for
the fifth time overall in the history of the program.
Fullerton closes out the season on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 31) with a 1
p.m. kickoff on the road at UC Irvine.
Should the Titans win, Fullerton would earn at least a share of the conference
regular season title depending on the Gauchos' result at Utah State, its
third such crown since 1996 and the second under Khosroshahin (2001).
