Cal State Fullerton juniors Marlene Sandoval and Lisa Kosena each scored
their first goals of the season Friday afternoon as the Titans defeated
host Northern Colorado, 2-0, in Greeley, Colo.
Fullerton improved to 3-5 overall on the season, snapping a four-match
losing skid and avoiding losing five in a row for the first time since
1999. The Bears fell to 1-8 overall on the season.
Sandoval (Placentia, Calif.) got the Titans on the board first in the
seventh minute of the match, capitalizing on a corner kick from teammate
Kellie Cox (Lancaster, Calif.) for the 1-0 lead.
Newcomers Kosena (Englewood, Colo.) and Rebekah Patrick (Billings, Mont.)
then combined to give the Titans the 2-0 advantage in the 24th minute.
Senior Nicole Williams (Irvine, Calif.) earned the win for Cal State Fullerton
in net, making a pair of saves in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Karen
Bardsley (Chino Hills, Calif.), who missed all of last season and the
first seven matches of this year recovering from a broken leg, played
the second half, but was not credited with a save.
UNC keeper Chrissy Marvin suffered the loss in net, but made 11 saves
on the afternoon.
The Titans outshot the Bears 19-4 with Kosena leading all players with
four shots on the day.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 26) at 12 p.m.
PDT as the Titans take on Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo.
