Cal State Fullerton freshman Erica Jensen tallied her first career goal
in the 83rd minute to complete the comeback and lift the Titans to a 3-2
victory over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Field.
Fullerton improved to 4-6-1 overall on the season while Davis fell to
3-7-1.
The Titans rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring three unanswered goals
in the final 20 minutes of the match for the victory.
The Aggies jumped out early as Megan Wall gathered a rebound off Lindsey
Raymond's shot and punched in her second goal of the season at the 5:50
mark to put UC Davis up 1-0. Raymond's shot from the right side was sent
low to the far post, where Titan keeper Karen Bardsley made the initial
save, but could not corral the rebound, allowing Wall to knock in the
loose ball.
In the 19th minute, Raymond put the Aggies up 2-0 as she converted a Bardsley
mistake into her sixth goal of the season. The Aggies had a free kick
from about 40 yards out when Katie Snyder sent a long ball into the box.
Bardsley came out uncontested to get the ball, but could not control it
as the ball fell right to the foot of Raymond in front of the Titan net.
Raymond one-timed the ball into the net, giving UC Davis a two-goal advantage
which remained through halftime.
In the 71st minute the Titans finally broke through as Kellie Cox gathered
a loose ball inside the 18 and sent a left-footed shot to the far post
past Aggie keeper Megan Daws. Less than three minutes later, Rebekah Patrick
evened the score as she took the ball just past midfield and dribbled
through the Aggie defense, finishing with a shot past Daws inside the
near post at the 73:06 mark.
With them momentum clearly in Fullerton's favor, Jensen scored the game
winner at 82:49 as she punched-in a rebound just in front of the Aggie
goal for her first score of the season. The play was set up when Erin
Shelton's shot from about eight yards was saved by Daws, but the rebound
went right to Jensen who converted the game-winner.
The two teams each ended the game with 16 shots while Aggie starting goalkeeper
Krystyn Lizak recorded two saves and Daws finished with three. Bardsley
ended her afternoon making six saves.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend as the Titans play
host to UC Santa Barbara on Friday (Oct. 8) and Cal Poly on Sunday (Oct.
10).
