Cal State Fullerton scored three goals within a span of 2:17 in the first
half and senior goalkeeper Nicole Williams (Irvine, Calif.) shined in
her final home appearance, earning her first career shutout in net as
the Titans closed out the home portion of their 2004 schedule with a 4-0
victory on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.
Cal State Fullerton improved to 9-7-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Big West
Conference, extending its winning streak to five consecutive matches.
Idaho fell to 3-12 overall and 1-6 in league play.
The four goals are the most by a Titan squad since Fullerton beat Oregon,
5-0, on Sept. 28, 2003.
Junior Kandace Wilson (Walnut, Calif.) got the barrage going, taking three
of the Titans’ first five shots before scoring her first goal on
the afternoon in the 12th minute. Wilson took a long pass from junior
Kellie Cox (Lancaster, Calif.), beat her defender and then the goalkeeper
to the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, Wilson scored her second of the match, settling
a cross from Lauryn Welch (La Mirada, Calif.) and one-timing a shot to
the same spot as her first goal for the 2-0 advantage.
Cox then added her fourth goal of the season in the 14th minute, taking
a pass from junior Erica Pryor (Upland, Calif.) and firing home a shot
from 20 yards out to the far right post for the 3-0 advantage at halftime.
The Titans added another tally in the 67th minute as junior Sereena Warino
(Aliso Niguel, Calif.) took a pass from freshman Emma Humphries (Wellington,
New Zealand) and fired home a shot from 20 yards out, sneaking it under
the crossbar for the 4-0 lead.
Fullerton outshot Idaho, 32-3, including holding the Vandals without a
shot in the first half en route to a 15-0 lead in the category after 45
minutes of play. The 32 shots is the second-highest total this season
and the fourth-highest single-match total in team history.
Williams made two saves in the victory while Idaho keeper Lindsay Smith
had eight saves in the loss.
With her five points on the weekend, Wilson moved into sole possession
of second place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 59 points
and second on the goals list with 26. Fullerton improved to 17-1-1 all-time
when Wilson scores a goal.
The Titans close out the 2004 regular season next weekend on the road
against local rivals Long Beach State on Friday (Oct. 29) at 3 p.m. and
UC Irvine on Sunday (Oct. 31) at 1 p.m.
