2004 Women's
Soccer Coaches
Cal State Fullerton head coach Ali Khosroshahin enters his fourth season in charge of the Titans’ women’s soccer program, turning around a fledgling program and establishing Cal State Fullerton as an up-and-coming competitior in the national spotlight. After spending four years as an assistant under Al Mistri, Khosroshahin has guided Cal State Fullerton to heights never before seen on the Orange County campus. Appointed as the interim head coach in March of 2001 after Mistri stepped aside to concentrate on coaching the Titan men’s squad, Khosroshahin was named the permanent head coach immediately following a national search at the conclusion of the season in November of 2001. He immediately led the Titans into the national spotlight, guiding Cal State Fullerton to the school’s second-ever Big West Conference regular season championship in 2001 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in his first full season. For his efforts, Khosroshahin was named the Big West Coach of the Year and finished second in the voting for West Region Coach of the Year behind then-Saint Mary’s coach Paul Ratcliffe as selected by Soccer Buzz. Khosroshahin’s second season saw a dramatic upgrade in strength of schedule, facing three top-20 squads during the year, and resulted in another 10-win season, posting a 12-5-1 record and a third place finish in a Big West Conference race which came down to the final weekend. The 2003 season may have looked below average on paper, but Khosroshahin’s aggressive scheduling (featuring six matches against Top 25 opponents) established the Titans as an up-and-comer on the national scene, finishing with a 9-8-2 record, a win over No. 13 Clemson and a pair of ties against No. 13 Santa Clara and No. 19 Cal Poly. Khosroshahin is also an accomplished recruiter, bringing in two recruiting classes ranked in the top 50 nationally and in the top 10 in the West Region according to Soccer Buzz. All three of his recruiting classes have been ranked the best among Big West Conference schools. No stranger to the coaching ranks, Khosroshahin has a wide range of experience from club to international matches in his young career. He began in 1992 as the head coach of the boys varsity team at Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills, where he earned Century League Coach of the Year honors in 1993. He moved on to San Marino High School in 1994, spending two seasons as the girls varsity head coach until 1995. Khosroshahin broke into the collegiate coaching ranks in 1994, serving as a graduate assistant for the men’s soccer team at his alma mater, Cal State Los Angeles. That season, Khosroshahin helped lead the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Division II men’s soccer playoffs and, in 1995, was hired as a permanent assistant coach, a position he held until 1997. He returned to the Titan soccer program in 1997 and helped lead the Cal State Fullerton men’s team to the 1998 and the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s soccer playoffs. Internationally, Khosroshahin has been active, serving as an assistant coach for the Mexican women’s national team during the 1999 Women’s World Cup and as a head coach and scout for the U.S. Olympic Development Program. Most recently, Khosroshahin was named to the coaching staff of the Mexican Women’s National Program in the summer of 2004, helping prepare the U-19 squad for the qualifying rounds of the 2004 Youth World Cup to be held in November in Thailand. He also assisted Head Coach Leonardo Cuellar with the Mexican National Team and its preparations for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. In 1999, Khosroshahin had the opportunity to assist Cuellar with the U.S. women’s national team during the U.S. Women’s Indoor Soccer Victory Tour following their 1999 Women’s World Cup title. Khosroshahin also had the opportunity to coach the U.S. National Team during a match in Tacoma, Wash. Khosroshahin has coached numerous club teams at various age levels while also participating in numerous soccer camps. One of his club teams, the Upland Celtics (girls U-13), won the Far West Regional title in the summer of 1998. Khosroshahin, was a two-year letterwinner under Mistri from 1989-91 for the Cal State Fullerton men’s team before transfering to Cal State Los Angeles to finish the final two years of his collegiate career. Aside from his college playing experience, Khosroshahin spent two years (1994-96) with the semi-pro Standard Falcons in the USISL and played for the Valley Eagles in 1997. He earned his “C” coaching license from the US Soccer Federation in 1998 and received his “B” coaching license in 2001. During the summer of 2002, Khosroshahin earned his “A” coaching license from the US Soccer Federation. In the summer of 2003, he was a guest lecturer at the Pan American Organization’s Continental Course in Women’s Soccer hosted by the Honduran Olympic Committee in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
