Titan Women Win Opening XC Meet; Men 4th

Sept. 4, 2004– Brea, Calif.

Cal State Fullerton's women's cross country team had five runners in the top 34 places Saturday morning to edge Cal Coast Track Club for the team title while the Titans' men had to settle for fourth place in the 2004 Season Opener Meet at Carbon Canyon Park.

Maria Blazquez paced Fullerton with a time of 18:34.90 for the 5K course to place eighth overall and seventh among collegians. She was followed home by teammates Julianna Masciana in 13th (12th), Catie Garrett in 21st (19th) , Luz Valdez in 27th (25th) and Alejandra Contreras in 37th (34th). Winning the race was unattached Erika Aklufi in 17:33.40, or better than 30 seconds ahead of runnerup Brooke Thomas of Cal Coast.

For the men the individual winner was Josephut Keino of Alliant International University in a time of 24:26.20 for the 8K while the winning team was Cal Coast Track Club. Titans finished sixth and seventh overall (fifth and sixth among collegians) in the persons of Jordan Horn (career-best 25:04.60) and Nick Arciniaga (25:12.90). Other top Titan finishers were Damien Nieves in 14th (13th), Aaron Hurtado in 25th (23rd) and Cory Vaelenko in 60th (52nd).

Cal Poly Pomona finished second and UC Riverside was third.
